Readers Response

Worried? Us? Is a great essay in which the author Bill McKibben expresses his grief on the world due to its climate change. McKibben has great passion towards the earth and takes pride being a part of the world. The thing that annoys him though is that some parts of the world aren’t doing or making any effort in lowering green house gasses. McKibben throws out some facts about the problem that really captures my attention. The use of numbers sometime confused me but kept the essay true and interesting. It made me think that the problem the world is having is very important. Even though the overall temperature rose 1 degree Fahrenheit, that 1-degree can cause major problem for plant and for natural habitat.

McKibben express his grief toward George Bush for turning down the Kyoto treaty, that if had passed would cut down major green house gas emissions. But he is not blaming bush for everything, he is blaming the people that live and just don’t care about the environment. He also says the certain tourist attractions will no be at their location in 15-30 years. The snow from the Kilimanjaro will not be there, and neither the glaciers of Montana, all because of the Global Warming.

What I really like about the reading was that, he persuades you from the beginning and until the end of his essay. The facts are true and it make one to think what will their children go through in 30 years from now, how will they live. It also makes one to think, “ Is it good to bring a child into this world that we live in”. Truly an amazing essay, that captivates the reader and puts the in the authors shoes.

Sanders Essay

Today things have changed a whole lot; both men and women take part in taking care and providing for the family. In the early days “Man” had one destiny, which was to work hard, and to suffer the health related issues with the jobs. A great description of the labor and suffering of man is the narrative “The Men We Carry In Our Minds” by Scott Russel Sanders, Saunders describes how in his childhood men worked and labored for many hours in the day, and how later on in the years they suffered from health related issues with their bodies. Sanders also describe the comments and reactions of women throughout his childhood. Although later on as time progressed his views changed and he realized that women had it harder.

Sanders men had many things in common, their destiny were the same and their hard work as well. All men shared hard work as one of the characteristics. Sanders says “When I was a boy, the men I knew labored with their bodies, they were marginal farmers, just scrapping by, or welders, steelworkers, and carpenters”(pg 788). All of the men Sanders described had one thing in common, all of their jobs were hands on. It required dexterity and the ability to use their hands in order to complete the work. After many years of working in the pastures, near hot metal, near sharp objects the true reality of their figure starts to appear. Saunders says “The bodies of the men I knew were twisted and maimed in ways visible and invisible. The nails of their hands were black and split, the hands tattooed with scars. Some had lost fingers” (pg 788). The men clearly had suffered the consequences of their jobs. But they did not think of it as a consequence, they though of it as “it was part of the job”. Clearly the men in Sanders essay were extreme hard workers and they lived life one day at a time.

By having this mentality about men, that men are the workers and women are the caretakers, Sanders clearly express’s his views about men and women. Sanders had more sympathy towards men. Saunders says “Warrior and toilers: those seemed, in my boyhood” (pg 789). His views on men are clearly shown, that men are what keeps this country up, if it was not for the hard working hands of men, nothing would be functioning. He also believed that men were warriors, superior beings that would give their life for the right thing. It is clearly shown that Sanders is sympathetic towards men and will always be on their side no matter what the situation is.

Saunders also expresses his views on women, he believe that “Now” women have it harder than men, “This must be a hard time for women, they have so many paths to choose from, and so many voices calling them” (pg 787). He means that there are so many different possibility and new decisions that women have to take, and that a lot of them are hard choices. Sanders compare his early views of men and women to his views later on in his life. When he was young, men hard it harder in the world, but as time progressed women were faced with a lot more choices that would require them to make a hard decision. Sanders and I share many ideas about the men in our life’s, I to think that my father is the hardest working person I know.

Since I was a child I would always see my father working around house, fixing all the nooks and crannies. He would wake up early in the morning; fix up the house and the set of to work. All of this after 5 years of age. Before age 5 I would only see him about an hours a day, he would work for 5am to 12 am everyday in order to support the family. This work repeats itself for 5 years, and to him he did not see it as an obstacle, he saw it as a duty and a mean of motivation. He would look at my sister and me and give us a kiss and leave to work. I believe he thought of us as motivation to be a hard worker and a great father. I would never get mad at my father for never being there, because all the times he wasn’t I knew were he was. He was out working doubles everyday so my sister and I would have a good up bringing and a good life. Today I’m happy that I’m at least half the man my father is, because no one can be that hard of a worker. I have never seen my father say no in all aspects of work. If his boss tells him to do an assignment, he stops what he’s doing and does his work right away.

As well for work, my father has always been beside my side, he has always given me support. By being a hard worker and a great supporter makes my work hard everyday to be the man that my father is, and to be the father he is to my to my future children. If I could I would want to shadow this wonderful man I call my father everyday, just top gain knowledge and wisdom through his actions. All in all he is all I want to be, because the man that I carry in my mind is the image of my father.

Another man that I thank myself everyday for his wisdom and support is my video production teacher Dan Devlen. This man is a class act; he’s a great teacher, but most importantly a great friend. This guy taught me all the tools of the trade; Devlen would call me at 12 at night and say that I was anchoring the show next day. I would reply yes because production is my dream job and how can one say no to something that they adore to do. He would show me ways to do editing if time was an issue, he would show me ways to film, technique for light, and graphics for segments. He showed me all, currently today he is the only teacher that is in my cell phone, and the only one that calls me every other day. Till today he calls me up to get my idea of a new segment, to brainstorm ways to broadcast a show, to get my overviews on the new students. One thing that I appreciate about this man was him being annoying. Annoying to the extent that he would make me do my work all on time and fast in order for me to have free time to dedicate for TV. Out of a 6-hour day in high school, 4 hours was always dedicated to TV. I would get the 5:45 am and sometimes leave 8:00pm, just editing, editing, editing. I give thanks to this man for literally pushing me to reach my goal, for yelling at me to complete assignments, for getting mad at me when the work was not done, for calling me at late hours to brainstorm, and especially for donating his time to teach me. All of my views on men where taught to my by my parents, not only men but also women to. I believed every culture has different views on both sexes but most of them are the same.

Being born Brazilian we are taught and we notice that in Brazil, men are usually the ones getting up early, doing all the hard work, and the women usually stay home to provide for the kids. We are brought up knowing that we have a long journey ahead of us with lots and lots of hard work. The mentality of a young Brazilian boy living in Brazil usually tend to support his father more that his mother.

My background is different, because I was born in the United States. At a young age I was taught about equality between men and women. Today I still follow that “Code”. Men and women are both same beings. It is said in the bible “The rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman”. Man and women are the same, made from the same flesh. If these beings are literally the same, they should have the same rights as well. There are many hardworking men in the world but there are many lazy ones as well. The same goes for women as well. My culture does not favor one or the other, we are all the same. We all have same rights.

If I had to compare my views with Sanders views, it is very clear that Sanders supports men more than women when he was younger, but he realizes later on his life that women have it harder.. He thinks of men are “Warriors”, “Great Leaders” that they “Work to Die”. My views are very similar with Saunders’s, men early in time had it harder, but now women have a lot more difficult decisions to make in their lives. Men work hard and women work hard as well. There are no difference between men and women; they all are born to work, and born to have a chance in success. All in all men and women are the same being on this earth, both have equal ability and opportunities to achieve success.

Hamlet

This essay simbolizes the growth of Hamlet throughout the play, what was once a boy dies man. Please tell me what you think and feel free to give me some suggestions and pointers on how to improve my writings.

Growing up

“To be or not to be” are meaningful words coming from a young youth in a time of despair. Losing his father, losing his mother to remarriage, and almost losing himself, Hamlet has to be one of literatures most diverse and meaningful characters ever portrayed in writing. Hamlet is the prince of Denmark in the late 1500’s, troubled by his father death Hamlet contemplates many time about suicide, and about his nation. Knowing that his uncle was the one that stained his father, Hamlet goes from “to be or not to be” a contemplation of suicide, to “the readiness is all” a significant passage portraying his maturity and well preparedness as to assume his own death to lead a country and avenge his father passing. Although how has Hamlet mature from the time of his fathers death to the end of the play. Hamlet depicts his readiness in many ways, as to his cleverness, his realization of the meaning of death, and to the murders the he commit to avenge his father.

After his father’s death, Hamlet becomes the most melancholy figure in literate, although it is very questionable if all of that was a façade. The world perceives Hamlet as being completely mentally disabled. When the “player” also known as actor show up to Hamlets castle he devises a plan to make Claudius confess his guilt by putting on a play mimicking the way Hamlet’s father was murdered: “The play’s the thing/wherein I’ll catch the conscience of the king” (III.ii. 581-582). Finally Hamlet is putting his brain to work other than moping around like a little kid. It’s evident that Hamlet has become more of a man and less of a child. This shows that his maturity level has had a small increase. The goal of the play was to find out if Claudius had any hand in murdering King Hamlet. During the play Hamlet coordinates the actors to do everything that the ghost of Hamlet had describe to prince Hamlet. During the play Claudius’s guilt grew upon him, and he screamed “ Give me some light-away!” (III.ii. 243). At that point Hamlets plan was a great success, proving that Claudius indeed partook in the murder

of King Hamlet.

Throughout the play Hamlet has a tough time figuring out who he is, but with the help of his father’s ghost, Hamlet has decided on vengeance. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern confront hamlet, they confront him saying that his mother wanted to have a word with him. Hamlet was already convinced that his mother married his father murdered, so he intended to be very foul with her. What was not known was that the Queen had been talking to Polonius (the father of Hamlets Girlfriend) to spy on Hamlet. Polonius says to the queen

“He will come straight. Look you lay home to him:

Tell him his pranks have been too broad to bear with,

And that your grace hath screen'd and stood between

Much heat and him. I'll sconce me even here.

Pray you, be round with him.”

The queen responds saying “I'll warrant you, Fear me not: withdraw, I hear him coming”. The queen was planning this all along, with Polonius in order to find out what hamlets real motives were. Hamlet come along into the room, and completely degrades his mother, until he pulls out a sword that frightens the queen and caused her to scream, exposing Polonius hiding behind the curtain. Hamlet says “How now! a rat? Dead, for a ducat, dead!” Right then and there Polonius is dead. This shows Hamlet’s maturity level because he is avenging his father death, and as well he is looking out for himself. Hamlets objective was to avenge his father at all costs, and by killing a “rat” he is eliminating his chances of being slain by the king and his men.

With intellect and cleverness on his side, Hamlet devises a plan to relieve himself from the constant monitoring of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. The king send Hamlet to England along with R & G, R & G has a letter from the king address to the English parliament saying that Hamlet must be beheaded. Hamlet discovers this

Up from my cabin,

My sea-gown scarf'd about me, in the dark

Groped I to find out them; had my desire.

Finger'd their packet, and in fine withdrew

To mine own room again; making so bold,

My fears forgetting manners, to unseal

Their grand commission; where I found, Horatio,--

O royal knavery!--an exact command,

Larded with many several sorts of reasons

Importing Denmark's health and England's too,

With, ho! such bugs and goblins in my life,

That, on the supervise, no leisure bated,

No, not to stay the grinding of the axe,

My head should be struck off.

Horatio, Hamlets best friend is flabegasted to hear this occurrence, but Hamlet say wait, do you want to know how I did it? Horatio says yes, and Hamlet goes on saying

An earnest conjuration from the king,

As England was his faithful tributary,

As love between them like the palm might flourish,

As peace should stiff her wheaten garland wear

And stand a comma 'tween their amities,

And many such-like 'As'es of great charge,

That, on the view and knowing of these contents,

Without debatement further, more or less,

He should the bearers put to sudden death,

Not shriving-time allow'd.

Hamlet made the letter to seem that the bearers of it would be the ones being executed by the leaders of England. How does this show his maturity? Hamlet made a pact with his father ghost that he would avenge his death by all means. By keeping his word Hamlet is not letting anyone get in his way. He has retained his responsibility and his word to his father.

The interesting thing about Hamlet is that he has a tough time dealing with death, which is his great flaw. The understanding of death does not come easy to Hamlet. Although he comes to understand death when he is at a graveyard and come along a wise gravedigger that speaks very well like Hamlet. The gravedigger has conversation with Hamlet about the body that was previously buried there. Hamlet asks him “Whose was it?” (V.ii. 143). There gravedigger responds “A whoreson mad fellow's it was: whose do you think it was? A pestilence on him for a mad rogue! a' poured a flagon of Rhenish on my head once. This same skull, sir, was Yorick's skull, the king's jester” (V.ii. 145-147). Hamlet grabs the skull and realizes the we live to die. The true meaning of life is death, although the bricks and mortars of life are all accomplished during out lifetime. Death to Hamlet was only accomplished by murder, by someone taking it away from someone. Although he come to realize that his poor jester Yorick’s, died of old age. “Thus Hamlet faces and accepts death in general, then the death of Ophelia, and still goes on with his life to plan and achieve his purpose, the death of Claudius” (Walker).

Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio: a fellow

of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy: he hath

borne me on his back a thousand times; and now, how

abhorred in my imagination it is! my gorge rims at

it. Here hung those lips that I have kissed I know

not how oft. Where be your gibes now? your

gambols? your songs? your flashes of merriment,

that were wont to set the table on a roar? Not one

now, to mock your own grinning? quite chap-fallen?

Now get you to my lady's chamber, and tell her, let

her paint an inch thick, to this favour she must

come; make her laugh at that. Prithee, Horatio, tell

me one thing.

After this occurrence Hamlet is mind set on what he is going to do “the readiness is all”. Hamlet will avenge his father’s death. During a duel set by Laertes and King Claudius the came up with a plan that would kill Hamlet. Laertes is a master swordsman, and decided to taint his sword with poison. The king had his plan of his own, in the event that Hamlet would succeed in battling Laertes, he would have Hamlet drinks a cup of poisoned wine to celebrate his victory. When both are dueling Hamlet strikes Laertes first, as well he strikes him the second time. In an act of excitement the queen drink the tainted cup of wine in an effort of celebrating Hamlets combatant skills. The king looks to the side and see his wife drinking the cup and tell her not to but it was too late “ It is the poison’d cup: it is too late” (V.ii. 235). Hamlet confused jerks to see his mother falling on the floor, to which Laertes strikes Hamlet poisoning him. Laertes and Hamlet scuffle during the fight to which the exchange swords. Hamlet now with Laertes swords wound him. Both men dying exchange some words, although Hamlet had the strength to wrestle down Claudius and made him drink the rest of the poison. The queen, kind and Laertes dead, Hamlet says to Horatio

O, I die, Horatio;

The potent poison quite o'er-crows my spirit:

I cannot live to hear the news from England;

But I do prophesy the election lights

On Fortinbras: he has my dying voice;

So tell him, with the occurrents, more and less,

Which have solicited. The rest is silence.

This is where Hamlet shows his true colors and his full maturity. He has already accomplished his goal of avenging his father’s death. Most importantly Hamlet shows a sign of patriotism by giving his power to young Fortinbras to lead the country of Denmark. After his conquest of the king and Laertes, Hamlet was worried for his country and decides to choose the best option for the success of his people. “ He urges Horatio to stay alive to retell the play's story lest the prince bear a wounded name forever” (Bloom).

The Cathedral

This is another essay that represents misconceptions of handicapped people in literature, and how the only difference they have from us is the way the perceive things in life. Please let me know how i can improve my writing as well as leaving me some pointers for further essays.

The Cathedral:By Raymond Carver

It is very often that humans judge other humans by what they look like. This is understandable in some sort because the first thing that comes out is one appearance. The first way of attraction is the appearance, and from there one can get to know the true person behind the face.

A great example of this is “The Cathedral”. The Cathedral explains how one prejudice/pre judging person reacts to someone that they do not know anything about. The story starts off with Robert a blind man coming to visit one of his great friends, although the husband of that friend is completely ignorant of not knowing anything about a blind person life. Although it is very evident that at the end of the story “Bub” understands completely what Robert feels and thinks by analyzing these series of events. At a specific point in the story, Bub gets a feel for Robert. He realizes a little bit that Robert is like anybody else. Bub offers Robert some weed and Robert accepts. Robert says, “ I do now, my dear. There’s a first time for everything” (426). This passage proves that Robert is like any body else. It shows that he can be a pothead to like Bub.

Robert asks “Bub” a series of questions about Cathedral thus showing that Robert does know what a cathedral might look like. After that Bub asks Robert if he knew what cathedrals are. Even though Robert heard it on the TV, he replied, “I know generations of families worked on a cathedral. The men who began their life’s work on them, they never lived to see the completion of their work” (428-429). By adding that piece of information, Robert to proves to Bub that he did know what they are, and how they are constructed in some sort.

Bub also learns that Robert is very understanding. Bud tries his hardest to describe what a Cathedral might look like. Bud says, “They are so big…they remind me of viaducts…they have carve devils, lords, and ladies” (429). Robert after this incident asks Bub to keep going showing that Robert has an understanding an encouraging personality. As well Robert is not afraid to do meaningful things that might seem a little weird to the norm. Robert asks Bub to get him a hard paper bad so they could draw the Cathedral. It was said “He found my hand, the hand with the pen, he closed his hand over my hand, Go ahead Bub, draw” (430).

This shows that Robert is wise in some sort. He is not afraid to do things to people that he doesn’t even know. He is willing to learn about other people if they are willing to learn about him. It shows that he is not different from one of us, Robert is exactly the same; although the ways that Robert reaches his objective might be a little different than the average persons. Robert must take the long way, in which he must really concentrate to understand a simple concept; such as a cathedral.

While drawing the Cathedral on the bag, Robert keeps encouraging Bub by saying “good”, “swell”, and “terrific”. Then in a wise notion, Robert asked Bub to close his eyes, but also to keep drawing. “Close your eyes now, I did it, Keep them that way” (431). Robert seem to want to educate Bub in a way only a blind man can do, he wanted Bub to feel what Robert was feeling, he wanted him to go through this drawing journey with him as if they were the same, the same person with the same disability. For someone who was very ignorant towards the blinds, Bub is feeling what a blind person feels; he is living a moment, a single moment that is something eternal for Robert.

By all of these series of events, this proves that Roberts is exactly like anybody else. Although instead of learning visually he has to rely on his aesthetics, touch, and a lot of hearing. Robert proves come out to be wiser than most people, but the reality is that he is just the same. Although his learning ways might portray him as a wise man. Bub now understands Roberts’s point of view on things, he understands what this man has to go through in order to understand a simple concept. Bub understands that Robert has to feel, he has to touch and analyze the motion of the hand so he can get an actual feel for the cathedral. All in Bub understand who Robert is, he now knows what this man has to go through, and that ha can relate in a sense because both of them had a time that they worked as one. By working as one Bub is in a higher state of consciousness, Bub does not want to open his eyes because he does not want that moment that he shared with Robert to end. He doesn’t want the point in time where he lost his prejudice to end.

Murderball: How handicaped athletes are affected by mass media

Murderball Essay

Its is very interesting when one see a documentary that explains most of their misconceptions. Basically I’m talking about Murderball, Murderball is a sport that people that are confined to a wheel chair play. It’s a mix of basketball and football, with the violence of an UFC fight. The player custom makes their own wheel chair, to sustain the impact of other wheel chairs that are coming in their direction. Although the documentary is called Murderball, I felt that the focus of it was to explain the life that special people usually have.

The documentary explains very well how these athletes can have a normal life, how they can drive, how they can work, how they can have a decent living. The question to be answered is “Is Murderball an effective documentary”. I say it is, why? Murderball is an un-biased documentary, it show all aspect of handicapped life. The documentary explains a lot of thing that people are afraid to ask as “Can handicapped people have sex?” The answer to that would be yes, one because circulation still continues to flow continuously down to the reproductive organ.

The thing I thought that was interesting is that I had always portrayed someone on a wheel chair to be very humble, polite, and nice. Although these athletes are the complete opposite of what I just said. They are swear, they are not polite, and very raunchy for people that have a disability. This is pure evidence; this proves that the documentary really shows how these people are. What I liked about the documentary is that they followed on so called “traitor” throughout the whole documentary. It explained that this “traitor” was cut from the American team, and in a range of anger went over to Canada to coach the Canadian team.

This documentary explains all of the misconception about handicapped people, and also explains that they are like anybody else. They go out, they drink, they have relationships, and they get married. The documentary conveys a message on “likeness” or “Equality”. No matter how handicapped one can be, they are the same people as us. Of course they have their needs but all of us do as well. Equality is for everyone, and if one is missing an arm, or a leg, fingers, it doesn’t matter. Cause equality is not describe by the physical features of humans but by being human itself.

Slumdog Millionaire Review

I wrote this essay for class in 08' when the movie was only available in art house theaters around boston.....please tell me what you think and give me some pointers on how to improve my writting.

Critically Acclaimed

Its is not wrong for a critic to always changes his views on movies when watched under certain circumstances. When a critic free watches a movie, all of the little details are completely flown over, but when information is supplemented before hand, all of the details shine and are evident very clearly throughout the movie. Danny Boyle again brings his talent to the screens, creating movies that affect anyone that see it.

Slumdog Millionaire is the name this time; the movie is about brothers (Jamal and Salim) that at a young age become street beggars and go through life with an amazing adventure. Throughout their adventure they encounter horrible things such as children being blinded for the purpose of receiving more money when the begged. As well in their adventure Jamal at young age bring in this little girl that they found on the streets. After a horrible encounters with a man that blinded children the three flee.

As the they are running from this man the little girls stays behind only to be used as a prostitute for the purpose of money. Throughout the years Jamal keeps looking for his lost love (Latika) only to find out that she is a sex slave for a top villain that controls Mumbai. Jamal goes on the Hindi version of who want to be a millionaire only to hope that Latika will see him and join him for their life together. This movie is truly the best movies I have scene, there is nothing wrong to say about it. Danny Boyle set the standard for aspiring moviemakers; Slumdog Millionaire is the best film of this year.

Truly an amazing movie by Danny Boyle, Boyle captivates the audience with sound, quick scenes, drama, actions, comedy, and love. Taken place in India, Boyle utilized lots of the landscape shots, and lots of the little details that make India India. With true cinematography Boyles, uses quick camera movements to give the audience the impact that they are actually running with the characters in the movie. The close up shots seem so unreal as if someone was running after you as well. Boyle does an amazing job with establishing shots; he uses a lot of the natural light to really captivate the essence of India. Because it is really hard to film in the slums, Boyle had to utilize all of the light that was possible, and to use more of the day as possible for the fact that light was limited.

All of this is very evident in the movie, and Boyle did a great job of transposing it to the audience. The establishing shots were truly amazing. Instead of focusing the camera outside of the location, Boyle makes the audience think about where the shot is taking place. This cause the whole crowd to keep constant attention to the movie and the level of focus and all time high.

The Editing was very simple, yet it was quick. Quick cuts and fades are only what were needed to captivate the audience’s attention. With the cuts and fade there was many dramatic sound and effects. The high exposure of light is some what confusing, but it contributes to the intensity of the scenes in the movie. The crisp clarity of the sound captivated the audience and me and actually made me fall back once. Boyle and his crew did and excellent job with sound, one because in and action drama/ love story sound is keen to keep the audience alive, and Boyle managed to complete that with no mistakes.

Although the mechanics of the movies was excellent, the content speaks for its self. Watching the movie not knowing a lot about India actually contributed to how much I liked the movie. I came in not knowing what to expect, ad left astonished. The graphic images and occurrences keeps the audience on their toes, the reactions of the slaughtering, the comedy scenes, to generally the content of the movie is all the same; Everyone is amazed about it. Something about a boy that does everything to find his one true love amazes everyone in the same way. His compassion and will of heart is something unreal. All in all the movie is nothing less that amazing.

As I was sitting in the theater, I told my self that I was going to be very open minded about the film, meaning I wouldn’t judge the movie before I saw it. Making that decision was the best option for me, I usually don’t watch movies that are not in a feature movie theater, but by watching Slumdog Millionaire I am much open minded by all movies.

Movies are all the same, meaning they all have the same purpose. They all want to convey a message and to entertain the audience. Slumdog Millionaire informed me about another country, it taught me about ones culture, and It opened my eyes in terms to value the life that we have here in the U.S. Slumdog Millionaire is the best on of this year, It will take a lot for one movie to overcome the clarity and the bliss that Slumdog Millionaire conveys.
